Kiln Dried Logs

Log Homes of The Smokies is committed to providing our customers with the very best products available - most importantly, the logs. Therefore, all of our logs are kiln-dried.  This process controls the amount of moisture in the logs used to build your home.  Kiln drying produces uniform, stable building materials.  The process also kills mold, and fungi, insects, and their eggs. It reduces checking (cracking), and provides a better base for stains and finishes. Kiln-drying your logs can remove more than 10,000 lbs of water from an entire home, making the logs easier to handle.  Air-dried logs often end up with large gaps between the finished logs, walls shrink, and doors and windows can bind.  Air-dried logs are often not sanitized, have sap seeping to the surface, and you cannot apply a preservative, and/or finish until at least one year after construction

Log Homes of the Smokies is committed to provide our customers with the very best product available, most importantly, the logs.  20+ years experience in the sales and building industry makes us feel that we cannot do this without kiln-dried logs.

Benefits of Kiln Dried Logs:

  • Kiln-drying stabilizes the wood
  • Kiln-drying, before the milling of the logs, maintains quality
  • Most checks occur during drying, and can then be weeded out if necessary
  • Kiln-drying kills wood boring insects and decay fungi (dead standing & pre-seasonal logs harbor both of these)
  • Kiln-drying sets the pitch and prevents pitch bleed
  • Kiln-dried logs are lighter, thereby saving in the cost of transportation
